travessia winery

December 2015

Hello everyone!

It has been almost 6 months since my last newsletter. There are several reasons for this, mostly good ones.

From a failed attempt to move the winery to a new (and awesome) location in downtown New Bedford to the difficulty in sourcing local grapes this past harvest, it has been a challenging year for Travessia. The last two Winters caused considerable damage to local vineyards due to extreme low temperatures. Once temperatures get to 0 degrees Fahrenheit, the productivity and survival of varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling is seriously compromised. So, this past harvest I had to widen the area from which I source "local" grapes - Rhode Island, Long Island and even the Finger Lakes. How "local" is that? I'll let you decide.

But to be honest the real reason why I remained incommunicado was something quite exciting...

As some of you may know, for the past 4 years I've been working on a vineyard/winery project with my family in Tras-Os-Montes, Portugal. 2015 was an important year for this project because we finally brought our wines to market. This took a lot of work. Vineyards were planted, equipment was bought, brand image was developed, prices were negotiated... you get the idea. Everything done practically from scratch. It required a lot of time, energy, and financial investment.

I tell you about this because there is a tie to Travessia. When my dad visited me in 2010 and saw what I was doing here at Travessia, he become re-energized with his old idea of having a family vineyard and winery in our hometown in Portugal. So PENADA winery was born. (PENADA is named after the small mountain where the vineyards are planted). Now I could go on and on about this, but this isn't the place and time for it. What I really want you to know is that PENADA wines have arrived in the USA!

I'm responsible for making these PENADA wines, so I would love nothing more than for you to taste them. I know this is a very busy time of the year for everyone, but this coming week I will be doing tastings of PENADA at three great locations. This is a good opportunity for you to taste these new wines...

Portugalia Marketplace - Monday Dec.21st from 11AM to 2PM
489 Bedford Street, Fall River, MA 02720

Social Wines Boston - Monday Dec.21st from 5:30PM to 8PM
52 W. Broadway, Boston, MA 02127

Barry's Fine Wine & Spirits - Wednesday Dec.23rd from 6PM to 9PM
573 Mill Street, New Bedford, MA 02740

Travessia, Penada... I've put all I know into these two projects. I believe the future will be bright, but the reward for me personally comes from having the ability to share these wines and their stories with you.

Wishing you, your family and your friends great health and happiness.
